How this PDF compressor works
This tool shrinks a PDF by re-rendering every page as an image at a lower size and JPG quality, then building a new PDF from those images. That is why it can make scanned documents, photo-heavy brochures and image-based PDFs much smaller, and also why you should know its limits before you use it.
| Preset | Page size used | Image quality | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low | 100% | 95% | Keeping pages as sharp as possible |
| Medium | 85% | 80% | Everyday sharing and email |
| High | 70% | 70% | Strict upload limits, reading on screen |
| Extreme | 55% | 50% | Last resort when the file must be very small |
The slider and quality settings let you fine-tune each preset. The tool shows the original size, the new size and the percentage saved, so you can check the result before you download it.
What to expect
- Scanned and image-heavy PDFs usually shrink the most, because the content is already pictures.
- Mostly-text PDFs may shrink very little, or even grow, because text is stored very compactly and turning it into pictures can use more space. If compression would make the file larger, the tool shows a message instead of a download: keep your original file.
- Text is no longer selectable. The pages become images, so you cannot copy or search text in the compressed file. If you need searchable text again, run the result through PDF OCR.
- Quality is for screens. The compressed pages are fine for reading on a computer or phone but are not meant for professional printing.
A practical way to reach a size limit
Many email services accept attachments of roughly 20–25 MB, and many application portals ask for only a few megabytes. Start with Medium. If the file is still too large, try High, then Extreme. If a text-heavy PDF will not get smaller, split it into parts, or remove pages you do not need before compressing.
Troubleshooting
- The tool says the PDF is already small or mostly text: compressing it would make the file larger. Keep the original, or split it instead.
- Pages look soft or blurry: choose a lighter preset or raise the image quality slider.
- The file will not open: password-protected PDFs must be unlocked first with Unlock PDF.
