What is a JFIF file?
JFIF stands for JPEG File Interchange Format. A .jfif file holds a normal JPEG image; the difference is mostly in the file extension and a small header. Some programs, and some Windows setups when you save a picture from the web, produce .jfif files, but many apps, websites and print services only accept .jpg, .jpeg or .png. Converting the file solves that.
JFIF to JPG: do I lose quality?
Not with the default option. Because JFIF already contains JPEG data, "keep original quality" copies the image data as it is and gives it a .jpg extension, so there is no re-compression and no generation loss. If you choose "re-compress", the image is decoded and saved again as a JPG at the quality you select, which can make the file smaller but changes the pixels slightly.
JFIF to PNG
PNG output decodes the picture and saves it as a lossless PNG. The file is usually larger than the JPG and it does not add detail that was not in the original, but it is useful when a program requires PNG. JFIF images do not contain transparency, so the PNG will be opaque.
Other ways to open a JFIF file
You can often rename the file from .jfif to .jpg, or open it in an image viewer or browser. Converting with this tool is handy when you have many files, want a PNG, or an app refuses the .jfif extension.
